The present study investigates the speech act of complaining, comparing the sociolinguistic behaviors of American speakers of English living in America (AEA's), Japanese speakers of English living in America (JEA's), and Japanese speakers of Japanese living in Japan (JJJ's). The participants included 10 AEA's, 10 JEA's, and 10 JJJ's. They responded to 12 complaint-provoking situations in Discourse Completion Tasks (DCT). The participants' written responses were categorized according to 14 pragmatic strategies in complaining, and analyzed statistically by ANOVA procedures. Interviews were also employed to elicit the participants' perceptions of complaining. Specifically, this investigation attempts to examine the frequency of complaining strategies utilized by the participants, the effects of social distance and relative status upon complaining, and the participants' cultural perceptions of complaining.
