Purpose. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine selected acoustic variables as a function of age in healthy women, and (2) to provide a normative acoustic database in the following age groups: 20--30 (Group 1), 45--55 (Group 2), and 70--80 (Group 3). Methods. Acoustic data were analyzed from a total of 46 women using the Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP), tested for differences between groups, and compared to current MDVP norms. Results. Significant differences between groups were found for fundamental frequency (Fo) (Group 1 > Group 2; Group 1 > Group 3), standard deviation of fundamental frequency (STD) (Group 3 >Group 2), and mean shimmer (SHDB) (Group 3 > Group 1). Significant differences were found between some age groups and the current norms on three variables. Conclusions. Elderly women's voices differ significantly from younger voices on several acoustic measures. Thus, age should be considered when assessing voice using the current published norms.
