The primary research instrument used in this study was a written survey mailed to all CEOs of credit unions with assets greater than
$5
0 million. The survey intended to analyze the CEO's responses to incentive and motivational questions. These responses were compared to credit union performance criteria as defined by an independent financial rating system (IDC Publications, Inc.).

This research provides the reader with a better understanding of the incentive programs that would help motivate the "typical" CEO of a credit union with over
$5
0 million in assets. The result of this research indicates that the more motivation a CEO received from the existence of an incentive plan, the higher was his or her credit union's IDC ranking. Statistical testing revealed that the differences in degree of motivation between those CEOs with incentive plans and those without were statistically significant. The relationship between performance as it relates to IDC rankings and CEO motivation was statistically significant. Also, those CEOs who received a bonus between 11 percent and 20 percent of their salary and could achieve a maximum bonus of 11 percent to 20 percent were the most motivated group.
