This study examines the work of six contemporary British dance-theater choreographers who identify their medium as a hybrid theater/dance form. Combining theatrical elements with dance or blurring distinctions between the two forms, they create performance pieces that are thematically complex and layered with radical social and political meanings. In concert with this interdisciplinary approach, these choreographers deconstruct other established categories and hierarchical systems such as the gender binary and heteronormativity in order to intervene in systemic sexism and homophobia.

The choreographers, Lloyd Newson, Lea Anderson, Javier de Frutos, Yolande Snaith, Wendy Houstoun, and Nigel Charnock, all renounce British dance that defines itself as formalist, as being too artistically "safe" and even hypocritical in its pretense to a lack of social meaning. Invested in changing the conservative policies and values promulgated by Thatcherism and the New Right, they choreograph works that inscribe the bodies on stage with distinctive tactics of resistance. Each work constructs a corporeality that rejects the neo-conservative political agendas of Great Britain in the 1980s and 1990s. Through analyses of choreographed aggressive, grotesque, confessional, and excessive corporealities in specific pieces, I delineate particular approaches to the problem of living within a stifling, neoconservative environment that is hostile to difference.
