Following the introduction to the four sources, the evolution of modern dance in relation to the Taoist teaching is presented. This focuses on three USA choreographers with profound interest in Taoist philosophy (Ruth St. Denis, Merce Cunningham, and Steve Paxton). Certain other related arts are examined in the light of the Taoist influence. Janet Adshead's "Dance Analysis Method" is used to describe one major work of each of the three choreographers: "White Jade" (1946) of St Denis, "Torse" (1977) of Cunningham and "Magnesium" (1972) of Paxton.

According to the findings in analyzing the above mentioned three dance pieces, the dissertation will be concluded with a determination that Taoism has significantly influenced modern dance in USA.
