Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Cincinnati, 1995.
This study examines musico-dramatic works and lieder that were produced by members of the Weimar court in the years 1776 to 1782. During this time Johannn Wolfgang von Goethe collaborated with the composers Duchess Anna Amalia, Karl von Seckendorff, and Corona Schroter to create the musical plays Erwin und Elmire, Das Jahrmarktsfest zu Plundersweilern, Lila, Proserpina, and Die Fischerin for production in the court's private theater. This study places both the stage works and lieder within the musical, social-historical, political, and economic context of late eighteenth-century Europe and considers limited semiotic readings of the stage works. Duchess Anna Amalia and Corona Schroter emerge as central figures in Weimar's musical life along with Christoph Martin Wieland, whose nationally circulated journal, Der Teutsche Merkur, was instrumental in disseminating elements of Weimar's musical and literary tastes throughout German speaking lands.Subjects--Topical Terms:
