This study is a practical investigation that lists available and recommended true harmonics for the principal woodwinds in use today, i.e., flute, oboe, clarinet in B-flat, bassoon, and alto saxophone in E-flat. 520 $a This study has shown that in the past harmonics were largely understood from a practical viewpoint and were mostly of secondary musical concern; that the basic theoretical understanding of harmonics as products of vibrating bodies did not emerge until the acoustical investigations and experiments of the late nineteenth century; and that in the middle to late twentieth century harmonics achieved independent compositional status.
520 $a Since in the literature for woodwind instruments, true harmonics were often confused with other techniques that were misnamed as "harmonics," e.g., multiphonics, a definition of a true harmonic for woodwind instruments has been proposed.
520 $a Following established practice, internationally approved criteria for music notation, and needed adjustments to distinguish between true harmonics and other related techniques, this study proposes a recommended music notation for true harmonics for woodwind instruments.
520 $a It was found that true harmonics have been requested of the flute more frequently than of the other woodwind instruments; that extensions of true harmonics called whistle or whisper tones are also available on and recommended for the flute; that the oboe has an established standard set of recommended and available true harmonics; that true harmonics are indeed available and recommended for the clarinet in B-flat; that only a very few harmonics can be tentatively recommended for the bassoon; and that a practical range of true harmonics can be recommended for the alto saxophone in E-flat.
520 $a Music charts of practical fingerings for the recommended true harmonics were developed for each instrument in consultation with practicing professional instrumentalists and are given in the recommended notation at the end of the respective treatments for each instrument.
