The purposes of this study were: (1) to ascertain the general characteristics, skills, and knowledge needed for successful operation and management of Color Electronic Prepress Systems (CEPS) in the graphic communications industry by entry-level operators and by beginning managers; (2) to apply the information obtained from this study to a task analysis format used by the Graphic Arts Technical Foundation; and (3) to develop a CEPS curriculum content outline for post-secondary graphic communications programs. Data for this study were obtained from six different major CEPS manufacturers, six color separation trade shop users of CEPS, and six printer users of CEPS. Perceived importance of 84 characteristics, skills, and knowledge items were measured in a survey using a seven-point Likert-type scale. Survey participants ranked the items in order of perceived importance. The rankings were arranged into two-axis matrices. The study concluded that: (1) Entry-level operators must be qualified and have competence in a wide variety of characteristics, skills and knowledge; (2) The most important technical skills and traditional knowledge competencies needed for entry-level operators were color separation, basic mathematics skills, printing process theory, and keyboarding skills; (3) The most important psychological/personality traits needed for entry-level operators were concentration, systematic thinking, willingness to accept change, problem solving ability, and not being easily frustrated. The most important interpersonal skills needed for entry-level CEPS operators were being able to make decisions responsibly, communicate, and teach hands-on skills and cognitive knowledge; (4) Beginning managers must be qualified and more highly competent in a larger number of characteristics, skills, and knowledge traits than operators; (5) Psychological/personality traits and interpersonal skills played a much larger role in a manager's job than in an operator's job; (6) Certain physical characteristics and abilities were important for operators and, to a lesser extent, managers. General recommendations were made for post-secondary CEPS training and education. A recommended content outline was created for a course in CEPS technology.Subjects--Topical Terms:
