Art and poetry are both methods of communicating. Used therapeutically, both allow individuals the opportunity to explore their worlds through the use of self-expression and metaphor. Though the two modalities seem to work together naturally, little has been written on using them together. This case study explores the introduction of poetry therapy into the art therapy treatment of an adolescent male. After a number of sessions with art-based interventions, poetry is presented as an additional creative outlet and included in the art tasks in various ways. Responding verbally and visually to preexisting poetry and writing and illustrating poetry of his own provided the subject with an additional means of expressing and understanding his truth.
