Thesis (Ph.D.)--Touro University International, 2005.
This study examined the relationship between dietary calcium and body composition in pre-menopausal, Caucasian women. Eligible participants did not have medical disorders or take medications that significantly affect body weight or fat. One hundred and three women completed a three-day food record, which was analyzed by a nutrient analysis program. Participants were measured for weight, abdominal circumference and percent body fat (% fat). Body mass index was determined from a calculation of weight and height. Age, total caloric intake, and physical activity were controlled for.

Linear regression analysis revealed no statistically significant (p ≤ .05) relationship between dietary calcium intake and body composition. There was a statistically significant (p ≤ .05) relationship noted between age and all of the dependent variables (BMI, weight, abdominal circumference and % fat). Furthermore, statistically significant relationships exist between physical activity and body fat; physical activity and calcium intake; and finally, total caloric intake and calcium intake. Though no correlation between dietary calcium and body composition was detected, larger studies for specific populations and tight control of variables are recommended.
