I examined the consequences of a mixed host species diet versus a single host species diet for the parasitic clonal plant Cuscuta attenuata. Survivorship and growth were significantly greater C. attenuata stems initially established onto host plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia compared to stems established on Aster ericoides. However, stems of C. attenuata which were initially established on Ambrosia artemisiifolia and subsequently trained onto Aster ericoides showed an increased amount of growth compared to stems which were initially established on Ambrosia artemisiifolia and trained onto another Ambrosia artemisiifolia.

This result was consistent with observations of naturally growing C. attenuata, which had greater accumulations on host species patches which contained a mixture of the two dicot species, Aster ericoides and Ambrosia artemisiifolia. These data suggest C. attenuata benefits from using multiple host plant species. Nutrient balancing and host plant species availability are thus far the most important factors which explain this pattern.
