Pennisetum flaccidum, a facultative aposporous apomict, was used as a female parent and was crossed with the following apomictic species of Pennisetum: P. mezianum, P. massaicum, P. orientale, and P. ciliare var. setigerum. These crosses were made to begin to understand the basic formation of agamic complexes in Pennisetum. The objectives of the study were to create an artificial agamic complex using controlled hybridizations, numerically analyze the morphological variation between facultative aposporous species and their hybrids, determine the frequency if n + n, 2n + n, 2n + 2n hybrids and their stability, and to gain a better understanding of the processes within agamic groups that will aid in developing a classification system for these agamic complexes.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study of these controlled hybrids has revealed that the 2n + n hybrids are stable reproductively and are morphology distinct from either parent. The n + n hybrids, as expected from wide interspecific hybridizations, were self sterile due to the high abortion of the microgametophytes and megametophytes, however when viable pollen was provided from the male parent the aposporous embryo sacs functioned to form seeds through pseudogamous seed set. The hybrids in all cases were morphologically distinct from the parents and given the reproductive stability of the 2n + n hybrids they could described as a separate species if their lineage was not known.
