The highly reduced female gametophyte in angiosperms is much less structurally complex than is the sporophyte. It is, however, highly specialized with the function of providing an egg and suitable conditions for embryo development. The conservative nature of female gametophyte function suggests that even small differences in its development may actually be quite profound.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A test of this hypothesis was conducted by comparing developmental data from nine species of Spartina using multivariate analysis and the Nucellar Growth Index with Profiles. The results of these two analyses were then compared to a traditional sporophyte taxonomic analysis by Mobberley (1956).

The multivariate analysis, using data from the megasporocyte, functional megaspore, 2-nucleate, 4-nucleate, 8-nucleate and mature female gametophyte stages, was in complete agreement with Mobberley (1956) for the species relationships and in the separation of Spartina into three complexes or subgenera. In addition, the multivariate analysis strongly suggests a hybrid origin for the disputed species S. bakeri with putative parents S. patens and S. cynosuroides.

The Nucellar Growth Index with Profiles, using data from the megasporocyte and mature female gametophyte stages, differed with each species, but the proportional similarity of the species within the genus was quite evident. In addition, a comparison of these species with two Chasmanthium species, using data from Flisser (1990), clearly showed a marked difference between the genera.
