The purpose of this study was to examine the differential effects of a health promotion Stress Management Workshop and Verbal Persuasion Interventions on the perceived stress and general self-efficacy of first year student nurses. The two dependent variables examined were perceived stress and general self-efficacy. A quasi-experimental two-group research study was conducted with first year student nurses at a large suburban community college. A total of 89 student nurses participated. Data was analyzed on 81 of the students, as seven students' data were eliminated due to unacceptable social desirability scores on the Paulhus Deception Scale (PDS, Paulhus, 1999), and one student did not complete the post-testing instruments. The data included pre/post measures of the dependent variables. The dependent variables were scores on the student nurses' perceived stress levels measured by the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI, Jones & Johnston, 1999) and general self-efficacy measured by the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GES, Jerusalem & Schwarzer, 1992). The independent variable was assignment to one of two experimental groups, a Stress Management Workshop with Verbal Persuasion Interventions and a Stress Management Workshop without Verbal Persuasion Interventions.

520 $a This study posited a Stress Management Workshop with Verbal Persuasion Interventions would be more effective in decreasing stress and increasing general self-efficacy in student nurses than a Stress Management Workshop without Verbal Persuasion Interventions. It was hypothesized there would be statistically significant differences for the dependent variables, perceived stress and general self-efficacy, for the student nurses who received the Stress Management Workshop with Verbal Persuasion Interventions as compared to the student nurses who received the Stress Management Workshop without Verbal Persuasion Interventions.
520 $a Using a multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA, SPSS, 2001) procedure, the results indicated, although the mean differences moved in the expected direction, there were no statistically significant results found in perceived stress and general self-efficacy between groups from pre-testing to post-testing.
