For routine analysis, the standard brightfield technique utilizes sediment from centrifuged urine screened in the fresh state. A technique utilizing the cytocentrifuge has been introduced which produces permanent slides. It has been suggested the cytocentrifuge method is more effective for the analysis of urine cellular elements and casts.

Using the brightfield and cytocentrifuge techniques, one hundred random inpatient urine samples were analyzed.

The brightfield technique proved superior in identification of leukocytes and equally as effective as the cytocentrifuge technique for identifying erythrocytes and epithelial cells. However, the cytocentrifuge method demonstrated casts in twenty-one samples not diagnosed by the brightfield method.

The cytocentrifuge appears most useful for diagnosis and documentation of suspected renal disease, rather than for routine screening due to the time involved in preparation. In addition, it provides a patient record and excellent teaching material which is missing in many institutions.
