Thesis (Ed.D.)--Columbia University Teachers College, 2005.
The beginning years of piano study are extremely important because this is the time when a student forms the mental and physical habits of learning and performing, which will remain with the student throughout his or her music career. These early stages of study form the foundation upon which subsequent piano skills are built. In order to acquire these piano skills and be able to enjoy music through playing and listening, teachers' choices of method books are a very important part of the early instruction. Well-chosen method books can spur interest and establish skills in note reading, technique, and interpretation, and promote an understanding of the form and structure of music.

Therefore, it is piano teachers' responsibility to constantly evaluate what they are doing, how they are doing it, and which teaching materials they choose to use. Teachers have a large amount of beginning piano methods to select from, which offer effective materials and approaches for each student, and they should focus on the individual students' needs and objectives.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the Korean Beyer method, which has been the dominant method for more than a century to understand why students, teachers, and publishers continue to use and promote it.

Based on the analysis and evaluation of the Korean Beyer methods, interviews with teachers, students, and publishers, and comparisons with the related American piano methods, the researcher found many weaknesses in terms of overall contents and its lack of a philosophy of piano teaching. Therefore, Korean Piano teachers may want to carefully examine the beginning piano methods before blindly applying the methods to the students.

This study hopes to help broaden Korean piano teachers' perspectives with regard to meeting the individual needs of each student and applying more effective piano methods books for different students as in the American philosophy of piano pedagogy which emphasizes diversity and variation. This study may also provide guidelines for the further development of Korean piano methods and pedagogy.
