It was found that Mark shows a carefully designed literary structure that helps to highlight his major theological emphases. After the prologue (1:1-15), the Gospel is divided into three major divisions each highlighting a different aspect of Mark's message. Each of these three major divisions is then divided into three smaller sections that reinforce Mark's message. Mark's major emphases focus on the identity and authority of Jesus, which is the main thrust of the first section (1:16-8:26), and discipleship, which is the main thrust of the second section (8:27-10:52). The third section of Mark (11:1-16:8) is a composite of these two emphases. In the final chapters Mark shows Jesus faithfully completing His mission and calling the disciples' faithlessness in His absence. In contrast to Jesus, Mark shows the disciples faithlessness as a motivation for his readers to follow Jesus faithfully in obedience to His teaching.

The overall arrangement of the Gospel also indicates a special emphasis on discipleship. It was shown that Mark generally focuses on the identity of Jesus in the outer points of the chiastic structures, while focusing on what the disciples should learn in the center of the chiasms. The first and last major sections are arranged primarily around chiastic patterns while the center section is arranged in three parallel sections that deal primarily with the topic of discipleship. The change from chiastic patterns to the parallel pattern highlights this emphasis on discipleship. The center section also contains the three passion/resurrection announcements by Jesus which indicate His mission. Mark also uses these announcements to show the negative response of the disciples and follows with teaching on true discipleship. Although Mark is not generally thought of as a "teaching" Gospel because of its small amount of actual teaching material, it was shown that the structure of the book focuses the reader's attention on the lessons Mark wants the reader to learn. These lessons are not communicated solely through discourse but primarily through practical demonstrations as Mark narrates Jesus's interaction with people throughout the Gospel.
