Thesis (D.M.)--Northwestern University, 1989.
This dissertation provides the reader with an extensive survey of standard piano teaching literature at the intermediate levels of study. Further, this project serves to answer essential questions related to the teaching of pedagogical keyboard literature: What is the grade level of a particular piece? Where can I locate a particular piece? What currently available collections are devoted to a composer's works and who publishes them? Are there any unique pedagogical considerations related to the works of a given historical style?Subjects--Topical Terms:

One chapter is devoted to each of the four main historical periods: Baroque, Classic, Romantic, and Twentieth century. Each chapter is subdivided into the following sections: (1) a brief survey of the significant keyboard works of a particular historical period; (2) an overview of pedagogical issues as they apply to a given style; and (3) a graded list of works, alphabetized by composer, including their location in representative standard multi-composer and multi-period collections.

The repertoire list was selected from nearly four centuries of keyboard literature. Many of the pieces that are included in the graded list are widely used by teachers and other works are relatively unknown works written by minor master composers, yet suitable for teaching. This survey is limited in scope and is not intended to examine every published collection that is currently available. Due to the vast amount of teaching material that is currently published, this survey is limited to a representative sampling of multi-composer, multi-period, and single-composer collections that have become highly respected in the field of piano teaching. Ten anthologies or series, comprised of a total of forty-six volumes, have been consulted. Each solo composition in each of these forty-six volumes has been graded and listed in this survey. A total of one thousand, two hundred and forty-seven compositions has been thoroughly examined and carefully evaluated with respect to level of advancement or degree of difficulty. The following grade levels have been used for this survey: elementary, advancing elementary, early intermediate, intermediate, advancing intermediate, moderately difficult, early advanced, and advanced.
