This study was designed to investigate the effects of the use of an advance organizer on transfer in a programmed instruction situation. The programmed material was a learning activity packet (LAP) instructing students in measuring and reading a ruler to an accuracy of 1/16 inch. Ninety-one ninth grade industrial arts students were randomly assigned to five treatment groups. Two treatment groups, one during winter quarter and the other during spring quarter, received an advance organizer along with the LAP. Two other treatment groups during the winter and spring quarters received the LAP and not the advance organizer. The fifth treatment group served as a control group and received the advance organizer only during the winter quarter. All groups received pretests and posttests.Subjects--Topical Terms:

All data for this study were collected by using the pretest and posttest developed for use with the LAP. The LAP, copyrighted in 1974, was developed by Clemson University, South Carolina Department of Education, and PICA Foundation.

The statistical analyses were performed using the analysis of covariance test. It was found that an advance organizer in combination with the LAP was more effective in decreasing magnitude of error on posttest scores than was the LAP alone. It was also found that the advance organizer was probably not direct teaching material as indicated by the correlated t-test performed on the pretest and posttest scores of treatment group 5.
