Thesis (Ph.D.)--Texas A&M University, 2003.
Capture detection in the right atrium has been a technical challenge due to the characteristics of the atrial evoked response and post pace artifacts. A system performing capture detection with no active charge balancing pacing pulse, such as a triphasic pulse, has been tested. The system performed capture detection for unipolar pacing and sensing, and the pacing and sensing electrodes were the same. Four dogs were used to study the system with Biotronik Elox 45 BP pacing leads. For each animal the system performed with greater than 99% sensitivity and specificity for capture detection. The results show the feasibility of performing capture detection in the right atrium using the same electrode for pacing and sensing without the use of an active charge balancing pacing pulse.
