This study is a modern history of science investigation into the life and works of Wilson Greatbatch, the inventor whose contributions to science and technology, and through it to society, have earned him such recognition that he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. In addition to the implantable cardiac pacemaker and lithium battery, other notable areas of research have included; biomass energy, Pavlovian physiology, bone growth stimulators, AIDS, genetic engineering, NASA space devices, polycystic kidney disease, and the development of a record setting solar powered canoe. Greatbatch is a pioneer of the branch of science known as biomedical engineering and has been a key figure in the development and growth of associated professional organizations, such as the IEEE/PGME, and has authored hundreds of literature publications in the field as well.

Greatbatch is known as a successful entrepreneur and has been the owner of seven local businesses. The basis of his business success involves the incorporation of an unconventional style of research and development, Greatbatch calls the "Edison Way" and is his trademark to remain free of government funding, and to pursue interests at will. There are many similarities between Thomas Edison and Wilson Greatbatch and these are explored as the latter holds the former as his personal hero. Investigation through a comparison model using the identity theory as a basis of support is upheld.

A local folk hero, Greatbatch has strong ties to the Western New York area, most specially, the Town of Clarence. The study examines him as a family man, the importance of his supportive and creative wife, his personality, civic contributions, a history buff, a patriot, and a national and international figure.
