The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among verbal memory performance, depression and glycemic control in an older type-2 diabetic population. Participants included 73 elderly type-2 diabetic subjects and 63 demographically similar non-diabetic control subjects. All subjects ranged in age from 60 to 85 years. Type-2 diabetic subjects were classified as such by means of previous diagnosis and through the measurement of fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) percentages. Control subjects were classified as non-diabetic through the same procedures. All subjects underwent medical examinations that included a review of their medical history, a physical examination, systolic and diastolic blood pressure measurements, an electrocardiogram, urinalysis for ketones, and blood assays. Individuals were excluded from study if they were found to evidence alcoholism, dementia, or cerebrovascular disease. All participants completed a series of measures that included the Digit Span (Forward and Backward), Vocabulary, and Block Design subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), the California Verbal Memory Test (CVLT), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).

The results indicated that the type-2 diabetic group and the control group were statistically similar in regards to general intellectual functioning as assessed by the subtests of the WAIS-R Type-2 diabetic subjects performed significantly less well than non-diabetic controls on the total recall index of the CVLT as well as the short and long, free and cued recall indices of the CVLT. It is evident that persons with type-2 diabetes are likely to have difficulty with the recall of verbally mediated information. No significant difference between the type-2 diabetic subjects and the non-diabetic control subjects was found on the CVLT recognition index. Strictness of glycemic control as measured by FPG levels and HbA1c percentages was not found to be related to performance on any of the CVLT indices within the type-2 diabetic population. The type-2 diabetic subjects reported significantly more depressive symptoms than their non-diabetic peers, however depression as measured by the BDI, was not found to be related to performance on any of the CVLT indices.
