Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2005.
This position paper reviews the research concerning the affects of the influence of Low Socioeconomic Status (SES) and its influence on students' academic success and the affect it has on their behavior in school. The effects are seen in early childhood (elementary school), adolescence (middle school), and in their teenage years (high school). Many of our students and teachers are lacking the skills to overcome these setbacks that are associated with low income families. The first chapter introduces the problem of low socioeconomic status and defines some of the terms to the reader. The second chapter reviews the literature regarding the adverse consequences of students from low-income families and the child's academic success. Chapter three discusses the consequences and their impact on students' attitudes and behavior. Chapter four discusses an analysis and position on the research results and chapter five explains what we are doing and alternatives that could be put in place to reduce this problem.
