Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2005.
This is a study of the language of Hipponax, a Greek iambic poet from Ephesus who lived ca. 540 BCE. The study is divided into four parts. Part one attempts to reconstruct the alphabet that would have been in use at the time of Hipponax's writing. An excursus looks at the evidence for his use of the letter 'sampi' and the possible origin of that letter. It is argued that Hipponax may have used the letter 'sampi' and that the letter most likely was either of Carian or Phrygian origin.

Chapter two is devoted to phonology. It contains an excursus on some words thought to show a development from proto-Greek *o to upsilon, a development sometimes referred to as Cowgill's Law. Chapter three addresses nominal and verbal morphology. In chapter four Hipponax's foreign lexicon is analyzed. The discussion focuses on words possibly of Afroasiatic origin, words from Asia Minor, including Lydian and Phrygian words, and words of unknown origin. The chapter closes with an excursus on Latin nenia 'funeral dirge.'
