Thesis (Ed.D.)--Harvard University, 2005.
A sociological and rhetorical study of six deschooling authors of the 1960s, this work analyzes a group of radical education writers who wrote passionately, powerfully, and for the everyday reader about the savagely unequal conditions of schools in America, and the stultifying effects of institutionalized education. Suggesting a complete reconceptualization of what it means to be a "well-educated person," these critics set off a small revolution in school reform that occasionally reverberates today. The study examines how the deschoolers engaged their readers in fundamental questions about the purposes of education; analyzes the nature of powerful learning in their eyes, and asks finally, why are the deschoolers reviled now? The works analyzed include: John Holt's How Children Fail (1964), George Dennison's The Lives of Children (1969), Jonathan Kozol's Death At An Early Age (1967), Herb Kohl's 36 Children (1967), Paul Goodman's Compulsory Mis-Education (1963), and Ivan Illich's Deschooling Society (1970).
