In a Church which believes in a God incarnate, in which God has taken on flesh and walked with us, the importance of the body in worship is manifested in every gesture, posture and bodily movement shared by the community. Dance---movement prayer---as offered by the liturgical dancer, carries the potential of embodying the thoughts, feelings, joys and fears in our hearts which struggle to find words with which they may be expressed. It has been so throughout history, but never quite so strongly or dramatically as it has in the last century.

Post-Vatican II liturgical dance is born out of the insights and directions of both the liturgical movement, an important goal of which was the full, conscious and active participation of the entire person (mind, spirit and body) in worship, and the evolution of Modern Dance, the founders of which sought to recover the expressive capability of the body in movement. The language of Modern Dance, as epitomized in the work of choreographers who represent three early generations of the evolutionary process of the art form, has shaped a new tradition of liturgical dance which, in turn, contributes to the realization of the Church's ongoing goal of full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy. Despite suggestions that dance as prayer is not a part of the Western culture, this art form has a long history of inclusion in the liturgy, and the appropriateness of the use of such movement in the liturgy has been acknowledged by the American bishops.

The liturgies of the Roman Catholic Church and other liturgical churches are rich with movement, gesture, and posture which must be performed by both celebrant and assembly fully and with intention to express outwardly that which is in the mind and heart of the person at worship. The modern liturgical dancer develops and enriches that movement to speak the prayer of the people in a language of movement when words alone will not suffice.
