This study examined the effects of L-arginine supplementation on growth hormone (hGH), body composition, and strength in male weight lifters. Phase 1 examined the effects of oral L-arginine (L-Arg) supplementation on plasma arginine and hGH. Phase 2 examined the effects of oral supplementation of L-arginine (L-Arg) on body composition and strength when combined with exercise.

For Phase 1, 8 males, 20--42 years, were admitted to the laboratory after an overnight fast. After baseline plasma L-Arg and hGH measurements, subjects were given oral L-Arg dosages of either 0, 3, 6, or 9 g. Plasma arginine and hGH responses were measured at 30 min intervals for 4 h. Plasma Arg was elevated in a dose dependent manner, with peak levels occurring 90 min after ingestion. The hGH responses to L-Arg were variable and did not appear to be related to dose, order of dose, age, or percent body fat. Thus, athletes who use L-Arg as an ergogenic aid to increase hGH secretion may not find it to be a beneficial supplement.

For Phase 2, 18 male weightlifters, 20--35 years, were supplemented for 8 weeks with either 250 mg/kg BW of L-Arg or a placebo. Participants were monitored for changes in plasma Arg, hGH, Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), lean body mass, body fat, total body water, strength, and urinary creatinine levels. In the L-Arg group, plasma Arg levels increased significantly for 4 weeks, but fell by the end of the 8 weeks. No significant changes were seen in plasma hGH or IGF-1 levels at rest or post-exercise. Urinary creatinine levels in the L-Arg group decreased significantly from baseline at 4 (p < 0.05) and at 8 weeks (p < 0.01). Significant differences were seen in back strength at 8 weeks (p < 0.05). No other changes in strength were evident between the two groups. No significant differences were seen in lean body mass or body fat between the groups. Results of this study suggest that L-Arg is not a viable ergogenic aid for athletes seeking to increase muscle mass, decrease body fat, or improve athletic performance.
