This dissertation is an in-depth analysis of educational inequality and stratification over the second half of the twentieth century in Viet Nam based on the 1997-98 Viet Nam Living Standard Survey (VNLSS). Retrospective reports of completed schooling from a representative sample of the adult population allows for study of educational attainment and inequality across successive generations who came of age from the colonial period to the present. The primary objective of this study is to describe and explain educational inequality by gender, region, rural/urban residence, social origins, religion, and ethnicity for the past and the present in Viet Nam. The second objective is to analyze the determinants of educational enrollment in contemporary Viet Nam, with a particular focus on family income, family size, and other factors that shape educational opportunities. The last objective is to measure and interpret the impact of unequal educational opportunities, parental socioeconomic status, and other individual and household factors affect the likelihood of a child entering the labor force.

520 $a In Viet Nam, as in many other developing and developed countries, the socioeconomic characteristics of the family of origin are the primary determinant of educational success. The strength of this influence varies from time to time and from place to place, but it is remarkably persistent. The impact of socioeconomic origins was stronger in the market-oriented southern Viet Nam than in socialist Vietnam during the separation period, and it continues today in unified Viet Nam. During the period of early socialism in the period of 1945 to 1965, the northern government greatly expanded educational opportunities and narrowed the gender gap. Since the 1970s, educational attainment has stagnated in Vietnam, especially at the lower secondary level.
