In Viet Nam, the United States and its allies fought against nature and lost, while the other side used and worked with nature and won. There is a lesson here on a wider scale: just as the U.S. lost in its war against nature in Viet Nam, so will man lose in his ongoing war against nature all over the world.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In Viet Nam, the United States and its allies fought against nature and lost, while the other side used and worked with nature and won. There is a lesson here on a wider scale: just as the U.S. lost in its war against nature in Viet Nam, so will man lose in his ongoing war against nature all over the world.

Nature decided the Viet Nam War, nature and the immersed-in-nature Ho Chi Minh Trail. The Trail, principal supply artery and spinal cord coming down from North Viet Nam, entering Laos, Cambodia, and the South, and hidden in rugged mountains and dense tropical forests, fed and controlled the war. The U.S., fighting a high-tech and heavy-firepower war against a nature-hidden enemy, could never cut the Trail, nor even significantly slow the flow of men and materiel down it. Not being able to cut the Trail, the U.S. could never win the war. Ancient mountains and a primeval forest, hiding and protecting a web-like-maze of paths and roads, and providing a field for the exercise of human organizational capabilities and the exercise of will, defeated the mightiest war-machine ever fielded by man.

Nature is far more than just background and stage for the great dramas of man, it is one of the principal players. The Viet Nam War illustrates this. Land was the prize for which the war was waged; mountains, forests, heat, night, clouds, rain, close-to-nature people, and microorganisms were critical factors in the conduct of the war; and nature decided the outcome. Nature also bore the brunt of the effects of the war, with entire ecosystems suffering, great wounds opened and not yet healed, and all of them lessons for man.

Along the Ho Chi Minh Trail is concealed a pearl of great price. There must be, else why behold again the suffering and loss? "Even in a wound there is the power to heal," Nietzsche wrote. Viet Nam is for learning.
