This is a qualitative research study of a new and unique online Registered Nurse from Practical Nurse education program. An intrinsic, within-site case study approach was used to evaluate the educational program. In this research, the program was examined and evaluated based on nursing and online standards, adult learning principles, and student outcomes. The importance of this study rests on the basis of this program being the first online RN completion degree of its kind. In addition, evaluations of entire online programs of study are limited and therefore needed. The results of this evaluation may aid the shortage of Registered Nurses in Michigan and in the United States by establishing best practices in online programming and providing a benchmark for replication of a program that increases student access to RN education. Individual semi-structured interviews and follow-up group guided conversation among all students, faculty, and program administrators who participated in the first year of the program were conducted, as well as an analysis of documents and an archival record review. The data collected provided a detailed description of the program development and first year of the program.

The student/graduate outcomes were satisfactory to the four students who graduated from the first year of the program. Of the original students, one student dropped early in the program and a second was dismissed later in the program. The graduates all passed their licensing examination (one on the second attempt) and are currently employed as RNs. The graduates were satisfied with the program but identified areas for improvement including student preparation, faculty and student communication, and testing. The program reflected nursing and online standards, as well as adult learning principles. Four themes emerged from the data: (a) the students entered the online program with some unrealistic expectations regarding program rigor and flexibility; (b) the student cohort provided learner bonding and support, which positively affected learning; (c) the students faced many barriers to success; and (d) the online RN from LPN program provided access and career advancement to students who might not otherwise be able to attend a traditional program. Therefore, the program does provide a means to increase the number of RNs by increasing access, though further development of minimizing barriers to success should be considered.
