Japan is one of the largest importers of chicken meat in the world, with imports originating from the U.S., Brazil, China, and Thailand. The four countries supply 99 percent of total chicken meat import volume and value. Because chicken meat trade in Japan concentrates with a small number of sellers (Japanese suppliers) and buyers (Japanese import trading companies), firms behavior point to the potential for imperfect competition.

This study aims to test market power exercise by both exporters and importers. Two economic models were used (1) the Residual Demand Elasticity (RDE) model to test for market power on the major Japanese suppliers, and (2) the New Empirical Industrial Organization (Monopoly-Monopsony) model to test market power of the Japanese import trading companies exerted in both domestic and foreign markets.

Secondary data used in this study cover 168 monthly observations and eleven independent variables between 1988 to 2002 for the first model, and 144 monthly observations and seventeen independent variables between 1991 to 2002 for the second model. The study found little evidence of market power exerted by both major Japanese suppliers and Japanese import trading companies. Thus, one can assume that perfect competition is present in the Japanese chicken meat market.
