520 $a These questions may be answered by comparing the organizational principles that structure the administrative paper archive to those that organize the modern novel after the spread of print and literacy. The centralization of the state archive during the French Revolution and the beginning of the digital revolution in the 1970s provide the historical boundaries for the present study, which examines four novels: Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed , Gustave Flaubert's Bouvard et Pecuchet, George Perec's La Vie mode d'emploi, and Vincenzo Consolo's Il sorriso dell'ignoto marinaio. Manzoni's and Flaubert's novels appeared in the nineteenth century, during the age of the document, when human sciences were expected to found the truthfulness of their propositions on archival records. Consolo's and Perec's novels came out in the 1970s, when the paper archive ceased to be the sole repository of records in Western(ized) societies and the novel was attempting to revamp its fortune as a major narrative genre.
520 $a This dissertation argues that the four novels examined are key examples of archival narratives, a type of fiction that appears with previously unknown clarity in the nineteenth century. Archival fiction bring to the fore the conflict between narrative and documentation that is hidden under the surface of every novel. Archival fiction may either exhibit records, be set in archives, or discuss the archive's means and functions. In particular, as the four novels under investigation demonstrate, certain archival novels take on the form of a dossier. Dossier novels perform a compromise between archives, novels, and printed books. They collect records, and are structured, at times, as dossiers, presenting factual evidence of the ties linking the archival and novelistic discourses with which this study is concerned.
