Growing up amid the height of elite culture in Nanjing during the late Ming, Gong Xian's encounters with cultural and social elite had a profound impact on his intellectual growth. He regarded himself as an "intellectual painter," and put forward the notion that this was the highest level of all artists. His artistic ideas and aesthetic values were deeply affected by this intellectual development. In this light, Gong Xian's poetry and his painting manuals for students are carefully examined as a way of illuminating his art.

Gong Xian's ambition in art is reflected in his conscious efforts, early in his career, to work through a series of diverse styles in order to improve his painting. His seriousness is manifested both in his decision to take Dong Yuan as his artistic model, and in his unswerving dedication to the orthodox painting tradition as it had been propounded by Dong Qichang. His greatest achievement was, however, to create a highly personal painting that was, though ultimately independent of the past, nonetheless rooted in a profound understanding of the traditions.

Landscape painting, to Gong Xian, was not just a tool for cleansing or comfort; for him, landscape painting served to fulfill his creative ambition, his desire to secure a place in art history, and his sense of the very meaning of life. Gong Xian's art not only stands for the achievement of a seventeenth-century Nanjing intellectual; his aestheticism testifies to a timeless value in the human world.
