Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stevens Institute of Technology, 2005.
The goal of this research is to develop a new fiber-optic weigh-in-motion (WIM) system based-on fiber Bragg grating technologies to replace the current WIM systems, which have less accuracy and higher cost. In this research, a new material, fiber-reinforced composite (FRC), is proposed to serve the load-supporting material of the WIM sensor because of its light weight, smaller volume, outstanding mechanical properties and easy fabrication and engineering.

In the experiment, the FRC WIM system is tested both statically and dynamically. Large dynamic range, higher sensitivity and accuracy have been achieved. Easier installation and lower cost are expected in the practice.
