The [Si(Me)2OSi(Me)2CH2]n polymer was prepared by means of a cationic ring-opening polymerization with triflic acid as the initiator. NMR, DSC and TGA were used to characterize the polymer. The polymer showed a high thermal stability in an inert atmosphere. A glass transition was found at -106°C, which lies in between those of its homopolymer polysiloxane and polysilylenemethylene analogs.

A low molecular weight [SiEt2OSiEt2CH2] n polymers (Mn ∼ 4000) was prepared by the polycondensation reaction of tetraethyldisilamethane-1,3-diol. A clear glass transition at -101°C was found by DSC for this oligomer and no other thermal transitions were observed. This is higher than the glass transition temperature reported for polydiethylsiloxane (-138°C).

The [SiMeHOSiMeHCH2]n polymer was synthesized by cationic ring-opening polymerization with triflic acid as the initiator and different side chains were successfully attached to the polymer through hydrosilation reaction. It was found that the glass transition temperatures of the polymers obtained were always in the middle of the range between the Tgs of their PSM and PSO analogs. High degrees of substitution, 91--100%, were found for the hydrosilation reactions.

The preparation and studies of polymers with [(SiRR'O) x(SiRR'CH2)y] n, (x = 2, y = 1, x = 1, y = 2) backbone structures were also carried out in this thesis research. A series of polymers with different substituents, such as phenyl, ethyl, isobutyl and hydrido, were prepared and the properties of these polymers were studied and compared with that of the related parent polymers.
