Learning communities are increasingly utilized in colleges throughout the country and can range from a pair of team-taught courses to a formal degree plan incorporating cohorts. Research indicates that learning communities increase both retention and success rates---two commonly used measures of the success of any program. Because Hispanic students have a traditionally high attrition rate, learning communities may play a crucial role in retaining a larger segment of the Hispanic student population. One form of learning community used by many colleges is a team-taught course, where two or more different courses are combined to make one new class. This study explored Hispanic-serving community college faculty perceptions of the ways in which team-taught courses enhance student acculturation. It also examined the perceptions of faculty members regarding the building of community in these learning community classrooms. Nine faculty members engaged in team teaching at Hispanic-serving community colleges in South Texas were interviewed. Common themes were coded, grouped together, and then organized by their relation to the primary research questions of this study. Knowledge about the faculty perception of the ways in which a sense of community is created in the team-taught classroom may be used to better plan for starting learning communities and planning faculty development.
