Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Pittsburgh, 1992.
The purpose of this research was to generate hypotheses about the development of information needs and information seeking behavior of children who are educated at home. Five families were selected for interviewing and participant observation using qualitative research methods. Written field notes were analyzed after each observation and interview session until a hypothesis was generated grounded in the written data and previous research. The hypothesis suggested that there were four identifiable stages in the development of the home school program. Those stages were: (1) An adjustment period which was sometimes characterized by conflict between parent and child, (2) the identification of the child's information needs, (3) the satisfaction of those information needs, and (4) the integration of the child's information needs into the home school curriculum. When the child's information needs were integrated into the home school curriculum, both parent and child exhibited satisfaction with the program.Subjects--Topical Terms:
