Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
The public school district superintendent, chief executive officer of the organization plays a crucial role in the education of America's children. Concern over recruitment, retention, and a sense of job satisfaction for this executive official is of significant importance to insure maximum efficiency in job performance. Local school boards and community stakeholders are increasingly cognizant of the need to have an effective leader. Through a survey questionnaire, 119 public school district superintendents from five contiguous Southern California counties were asked their perception of specific attributes of the position at time of recruitment, renegotiation of contract, and aspects of job satisfaction. Data analyses indicated statistical significance among elements across time that are perceived as very important by public school district superintendents in terms of initial recruitment, employment contract renegotiation and perceived job satisfaction. These elements provide insight into what boards of education should keep in mind to insure effective recruitment, retention, and job satisfaction for public their school district superintendent.
