Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Central Florida, 2003.
The purpose of this study was to investigate motivation, professional and personal expected outcome, and matriculation experience of degree seeking adult students, age 55 and over attending a community college. The study adds to the empirical research about matriculation needs and perceptions of older adult students, guiding higher education toward better service and institutional effectiveness. The research questions were as follows: (1) What do degree seeking students age 55 and over report as their motivation for seeking a degree at a community college? (2) What do degree seeking students age 55 and over report as their expected professional outcome from attending a community college? (3) What do degree seeking students age 55 and over report as their personal outcome from attending a community college? (4) What are the perceptions of degree seeking students age 55 and over as they relate to the satisfaction quality of their matriculation experience in a community college?

A mail questionnaire conceptually framed the study around the four basic questions which were reviewed by a panel of objective experts and tested for validity. A decision was made to use a mail survey technique. Brevard Community College's Office of Institutional Effectiveness agreed to participate and administered the distribution and collection of the questionnaires. In March 2003, 189 questionnaires were mailed. One-hundred two surveys were returned and were usable for analysis.

Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. In regard as to why adults age 55 and over attend a community college to seek a degree, participants in the present study ranked the desire to learn new things and improve academic skills as the motivational reasons. In regard to expected professional outcome, once enrolled, adults 55 and over will continue to stay involved in educational pursuits and expect to use the skills learned in future vocational activities or personal endeavors. In addition, in regard to expected personal outcome, adults 55 and over rank self enrichment and staying academically active highest. Finally, in regard to satisfaction, adults 55 and over reported a high level of satisfaction with the educational institution surveyed, its programs, and support services.
