Thesis (M.A.)--Duquesne University, 1994.
Following the October Revolution a number of avant-garde architects--among them Ivan Leonidov, El Lissitzky, Konstantin Melnikov, Nikolai Miliutin, and the Vesnin brothers--designed structures that allowed for the development of communal living and organized society to maximize productivity. Their designs were rarely implemented by the Soviet government and have since been criticized as utopian. The utopian nature of these designs may be seen as an attempt to transcend the societal divisions which emerged from the political and economic revolutions of the modern age, a goal for which Marxist theory also strove. Yet in practice the Bolshevik Party fully rejected the radical reorganization of society along communal lines in favor of a more limited approach. The reasons behind this oft-criticized retreat from revolutionary ideals illuminate the character of the Bolshevik leadership, the contradictions inherent in Marxist theory, and the fundamental opposition between the concept of utopia and the organic qualities of human nature.Subjects--Topical Terms:
