The purpose of this personal process study was to explore the mother-daughter relationship in relation to my own struggles growing up with a mother who suffered from depression as a result of a chronic physical illness. Research related to the mother-daughter relationship and children of depressed parents was reviewed along with the impact on children of families facing financial stress.

The creation of a visual journal coupled with verbal therapy were the main therapeutic agents in discovering my emotions including anger, guilt, anxiety and ambivalence toward my mother-daughter relationship. The completed journal was an insightful exploration of my own complexities and a courageous journey to change the negative aspects of my own relationship with my mother.
