Thesis (M.S.)--Eastern Michigan University, 1994.
Ethics in business practices and personal behavior are important in the hospitality industry in areas such as sexual harassment, internal theft and truth-in-menu legislation. Are hospitality management students prepared ethically to assume management positions? Students' ethical perceptions were compared to standards of hospitality organizations as interpreted by industry managers. The Hospitality Ethics Scenarios survey was administered to students (n = 45) and managers (n = 52) representing various industry segments. Statistical analysis of one of eleven dilemmas indicated that managers had higher ethical perception than undergraduates. Students with less classroom and work experience did not score lower than more experienced students. The qualitative data suggested a wide range of ethical perception among students and managers but also suggested that these two groups were similar. Students had difficulty recognizing ethical dilemmas and were unable to recall discussion of ethical issues in class, suggesting relevant ethical issues should be presented and noted specifically across the curriculum.Subjects--Topical Terms:
