Using grounded theory, the purpose of this dissertation was to develop and articulate a theory and process-model of interactional harmony and discord. The primary focus was to answer the question: What happens, moment-to-moment, during the unfolding of interactions in significant, well-established relationships? The grounded theory analysis and synthesis resulted in a theory and process-model of interactional harmony and discord.

520 $a There are three contributions made by this dissertation. One scientific contribution involves development of a theory and process-model regarding moment-to-moment interactional processes (both intraindividual and interindividual) across the entire continuum of dyadic interactional episode. A second scientific contribution involves conceptualization of both harmony and discord within a single theory and process-model. Finally, a methodological contribution of this investigation is the use of grounded theory with entire papers of published, psychological secondary sources.
520 $a The model describes the initial conditions of each partner in an interaction, such as each person's complexly constructed self- and other-perceptions and expectations regarding one's own and another's characteristics (e.g., temperament), states (e.g., arousal/affect), relational schemas, and relational history and initial engagement in the interaction. The initial conditions of Partners A and B interact and bidirectionally influence one another via feedback loops. Additionally, the interaction takes place within contexts that can affect the dyadic communications (e.g., noisy restaurant or sociocultural festival).
520 $a In this nonlinear dynamical system, these initial conditions can change from one instant to the next through intraindividual and dyadic state dynamic feedback processes (e.g. momentary changes in complex constructions of interpersonal perceptions and expectations regarding one's self and partner). Multiple iterations through the continual feedback loops can change these complexly constructed self- and other-perceptions and expectations regarding one's own and partner's moment-to-moment experiences as well as the system behaviors' path of dyadic trajectory.
520 $a Higher-order emergent core characteristics influence Partners A and B, intra-individually, as well as interactions between them, dyadically, via bidirectional feed-back processes. Along the continuum of harmony and discord, various combinations of emergent dyadic properties continually self-organize, create, promote, and maintain the spontaneous emergence of a multitude of possible interactional trajectories.
