This study examines works by Latina, African-American, and white American authors to examine the intersections of race and ethnicity with property, class (in an economic and social sense), and American citizenship. I explore the way that Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton, Charles Waddell Chesnutt, Willa Cather and William Faulkner portray the struggles of minorities to achieve social, economic, and political freedom. My approach is interdisciplinary and historical and builds on the work of critical race theorists who argue that concepts of property and race interact to oppress minorities. I argue that ownership not only oppresses but also empowers minorities. Each text I examine portrays identity, both civic and personal, as partially determined by one's relationship to property. When this relationship is threatened, so is one's identity.

520 $a I chose these writers because of their differences; each text interrogates a different aspect of property and identity. Both Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don (1885) and Chesnutt's The Marrow of Tradition (1901) protest social, economic, and political inequality. Ruiz de Burton's The Squatter and the Don explores the role of government in promoting injustice that results in a lack of economic opportunities for the Californios (former Mexicans who became Americans) and other California citizens. Chesnutt's The Marrow of Tradition scrutinizes the role of racial etiquette in advancing practices designed to disenfranchise blacks and limit their ability to acquire property. By contrast to Ruiz de Burton and Chesnutt, Cather's The Professor's House (1925) and Faulkner's "The Fire and the Hearth" (1942) and Intruder in the Dust (1948) are preoccupied with the consumption practices of minorities and the responsibilities associated with ownership. The Professor's House invokes ethnic stereotypes in examining the relationship between property and identity, and moving to a new house precipitates Professor Godfrey St. Peter's mid-life crisis. In Faulkner's "The Fire and the Hearth" and Intruder in the Dust Lucas Beauchamp's status as a black property owner allows him to express some personal agency in a segregated society. The study suggests that despite permutations in concepts of race and property, American identity remains linked to these concepts.
