Modern theories of solvent systems have demonstrated the influence of solvents on the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical and biological reactions. The primary factors responsible for determining the solvent's effect on these reactions are its dynamical properties. These include the viscosity (eta), refractive index (r), and the dielectric constant (epsilon).

In this work we determined these properties of micelles of cationic, anionic and nonionic surfactants. The viscosity of these media ranged from 1.33 cP in a 0.10 M CTAB solution to 2.60 cP in a 0.16 M Triton X-100 solution.

Other properties of micelles that influence their use as solvent systems are their surface potential and geometrical structure. These factors were determined for micelles of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in continuation of our physical characterization. This was done using the Fromhertz methodology, that is, pKa - pKo = -psioF/2.303RT.

The geometrical structure of cationic micelles was also determined. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
