Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Toledo, 2005.
For several decades researchers attempted to develop a complete model of the tire to answer the complex questions regarding the behavior of the tire under real operating conditions. However, the complexities of the major materials and their interactions in a composite structure proved to be daunting. The effects of the simplifications resulted in models that were less than accurate representations of the true tire. Furthermore, the conditions of motion and contact of the tire to real pavements were generally ignored in these analyses.

The pneumatic tire is a flexible composite structure which has the functions of carrying the load and transmitting the drive, brake and steering forces at the contact interface with the road surface. This structure is heterogeneous, anisotropic, materially and geometrically non-linear, viscoelastic with moderate and large strains and deformations.

Micro-mechanics, composite laminate and thin shell theories are integrated in a consistent tire model solved by a complex symbolic-numeric algorithm. Deformations, strains, force and moment resultants of the entire structure are described as functions of structural material properties, undeformed tire profile, and applied forces. The deformation of the tire and the determination of the forces in the contact patch are the main objectives of this model. This model is an accurate description of tire behavior based on principles of physics. It is developed for use with the resources available on Windows based personal computers.

The finite difference method is used to solve the differential system of equations and an appropriate code is developed with Mathematica software. The computation is performed for uniform and locally distributed loads. The results have been validated.
