Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 1997.
This work examines the social context and implications of Taiwanese pilgrimages to recently reconstructed temples in Fujian Province, China. I argue that discussions of "folk belief", "liberalization", and "authenticity" index cleavages in and among local organizations (such as temple committees and historical preservation councils) administering reconstructions or promoting pilgrimages. Beyond showing how these debates over cultural representation both inform and are implicated in the practices of Taiwanese pilgrims and their Chinese hosts, I also demonstrate that the grammar of folk belief makes pilgrimages visible as "public" events. In this regard, I discuss the role of modern urban planning and communications media in the framing of "noisy-hot" crowds, where the visibility of pilgrimage as a cultural spectacle serves to render these activities intelligible within national and local versions of popular culture.
