This study is concerned with the appropriateness of GIS as an instructional method for teaching sixth grade students about Kansas water resources. The quasi-experimental design was chosen for this study because of the ease of using intact classes. Treatment consisted of ten lessons. Perceptions of subjects toward water were assessed using a semantic differential instrument. Nine concepts were assessed in this portion of the study. Results of the analysis of variance, with a

significance level, show a difference by gender for fresh water, by site for groundwater, and by site and gender for water use. No other differences were found. Results of the perceptions assessment can be generalized to a larger population.
