In 1830's America, the Indian Removal Act determined where American Indians would live. The purpose was to place Indians in a remote region that the general population of the country would not inhabit, to isolate the Indians, and to assess what negotiations would be needed to remove other tribes from the South to this region. That territory is now known as Oklahoma.

Washington Irving, a popular writer, accompanied Commissioner Ellsworth on a month long tour of Indian Territory in October of 1832. His written account, A Tour on the Prairies, was widely read and was an important cultural history. Ellsworth's report to President Jackson reassured the government that Indian relocation was possible.

This study uses accounts by Irving, Ellsworth, Latrobe and Pourtales, plus paintings by George Catlin of the three tribes encountered on the tour. Chapters reconstruct the tour and show the importance of those encounters on White and Indian cultures.
