A researcher-developed survey instrument with 36 items, employing primarily a five-point Likert scale format, was used to collect data from 262 participants who reported their expertise in dance in departments of physical education from 165 colleges and universities in Taiwan. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including means, standard deviations, t tests, one-way analyses of variance (ANOVAs), and Pearson product-moment correlations were performed to answer the research questions.

The following findings were noted. Dance instructors perceived that Kraus, Chapman, & Dixon's framework of goals and values of dance education provides guidance for general dance education in Taiwan. Regarding instructional practices, instructors more often used students' learning attitude and skill testing in evaluations, incorporated brief history of dance and various dance skills in dance instruction. There was a little relation between instructional practices that instructors frequently used and instructors' perceptions of the degree of importance of goals of dance education. The influential demographic characteristics for instructors' perceptions of values and goals of dance education were gender and teaching rank. The instructors' years experience and primary expertise in dance were the demographic characteristics that most significantly influenced their use of instructional practices. Dance instructors would like to enhance their knowledge of dance as art by attending performances and workshops as well as increasing their knowledge of dance and appropriate pedagogical practices. Finally, dance instructors perceived the goals and values of dance education identified by Kraus, Chapman, & Dixon (1991) were impartment; however, their instructional strategies did little to help students achieve these goals.
